What is Halloween?
Its certainly not about Satan or Devil worship. Halloween activities came about as a celebration for the end of the Harvest Season. In the United States, we were originally an aggregarian culture- meaning our ancestors were farmers.
As farmers we work very , very hard all year to plant and grow crops. As Mother Nature does her work, the seasons pass and soon the cold weather is near. We had to work very hard to harvest our crops to get through the winter.
When the work was (and is) done, it was time for celebration. This was usually done by the communities getting together and celebrating with food and festivities. The timing of this often coincided with All Hallow's Eve which is the night before the Christian All Souls Day--- Thus Halloween.
There are still many harvest celebrations around the world. The Chinese MOON FESTIVAL occurs mid September when crops have been gathered and the moon is at its fullest. This festival honors the Moon Goddess known as the Moon Lady.
In Provins France, during the last week in August the HARVEST WHEAT FESTIVAL is celebrated. This is a week long celebration . Homes are decorated and parades are held with floats pulled by tractors. Antique farm tools and equipment are displayed.
SUKKOT is the Jewish fall harvest festival. A time for gathering together with family to enjoy special feasts. Many will build a Sukkah to represent the simple shelters of their ancestors.
That is what Halloween means to us too. A celebration of harvest, and the end of another year. A time to savor with friends and family through fun and festivities.
